In the late 1980s and early 1990s there was a rapid growth in interest in AI. While earlier spurts of AI were driven by traditional symbolic AI, this period was also marked by early success of sub-symbolic AI, notably {{neural networks. However, the hype was a little overblown, and in the early 1990s, this sub-symobolic spring descended into the long AI winter, which lasted until the rise of {[deep learning}} in the 2010s.
